Baptism and Purgatory

April 25, 2007 by Recovering Catholic

I have been thinking a lot about my grandpa’s last wish for me. He wanted me to baptize my two year old daughter. Now, at one point I had told my parents that I would baptize her just to keep the peace, but that I didn’t have the same beliefs that they did and I would basically be lying. The only thing that my mom had to go on was the fact that if something were to happen to my daughter she would be welcome into Heaven. Well, now the Church has decided that there is no more “in limbo”, where children and babies would be if something were to happen and they weren’t baptized before they died. So now that the Church has decided that, does that mean that all of the little souls that were “in limbo” get a free pass into Heaven? Same goes for Purgatory. A few years back it was declared by the same Church that Purgatory no longer exists. Now, I went to a Catholic elementary school where we learned all about Purgatory. It’s where a soul went to repent before going to Heaven. The soul had to be pure, so when a loved one died we were supposed to pray for them and that would help them out of Purgatory and into Heaven. I was a little girl, and in order for me to really process that information I imagined that my prayers were like tokens, and when my loved one got enough tokens then he/she could buy their way out of Purgatory. So, like I told my husband, what happened to all of those souls when the Church decided that there was no more Purgatory. Did they get into Heaven on good behavior? If anyone knows I would be MORE than happy to hear what they have to say. Thanks!

Purgatory is a DOGMA meaning it is an unchangable truth.Refer to Cannon Law prior Second Vatican Council. It is not simply a matter that can be disbanded at will regardless of Pontiff.
Catholics are mis-informed either by renegade clerics or neo-modernist publishers without seeking apologetic understanding. Is why the catholocity been offered today is not catholocity! When a dogma is placed it is the Vicar of Christ speaking ex-cathedra meaning he uses his extra ordinary power of infallibility to bind it.If the official church ammended the act it has no right.
If this is the ideology of post Vatican II then you have been lied to…The second Vatican Council is a pastoral{experimental)council not dogmatic such as the Council Of Trent. So NO purgatory has not faded into oblivion?

Guesses on top of interpretations on top of ASSUMPTIONS. Rational people don’t operate this way today.

In the last 2000 years, rational people have come to understand the difference between “I think it happened” and “It really happened”.

Religion is all icing, no cake. It is a complex role playing game, but at its essence, there is no fundamental difference between Christianity and Magic: The Gathering.

When you tell me that “Catholics are mis-infomed by renegade clerks” you might as well be saying “The Ravenous Bugblatter beast of Traal is so mind-bogglingly stupid, it assumes if you can’t see it, it can’t see you. If you encounter one, you should immediately wrap your towel around your head to ward it off.”

There’s a rule for you to live by.

Rationality and reason are the basis of logic.

Logic is a system used to determine the validity of a hypothesis or theory.

I’m not speaking of lies and truth, I’m speaking of demonstrating theories. Logic is blind to the malevolence you imply: My love or spite for a theory does not affect the validity of that theory.

Again, please forgo the insults and ad hominems. I have nothing against you, only the veracity of the opinions you have expressed.
