Autographed Book Contest

May 1, 2008

UPDATE FOR THOSE COMING LATE IN THE GAME: All entries are in and have been published for your review and vote. Find all the entries here.

Thanks to our friend at Debunking Christianity, John Loftus, TJM is holding a small contest. We our looking for your story. What were the triggers that led you down the path of skepticism? Did you forsake a religion? What is your de-conversion story? Have you always been an atheist? Why?

Yes, these are the things we want to hear about. May the best article win. Win what? An autographed copy of the book, ” Why I Rejected Christianity: A Former Apologist Explains” by John Loftus. Don’t know about John? Allow me to give you some background info on him.

How have I gone from being a defender of Christianity to an atheist? That is the question of this book. I was a Christian apologist set for the express purpose of defending Christianity from intellectual attacks. I was not afraid of any idea, because I was convinced that Christianity was true and could withstand all attacks. Now I turn that same intellectual muscle into questioning the things I formerly defended.

I graduated from Great Lakes Bible College, Lansing Michigan, in 1977. Afterwards I became the Associate Minister under Eddie Bratton in Kalkaska, Michigan, for two years. Then I attended Lincoln Christian Seminary, Lincoln, IL, and graduated in 1982 with M.A. and M.Div. degrees, under the mentoring of Dr. James D. Strauss. After this I attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and graduated in 1985 with a Th.M degree, under the mentoring of Dr. William Lane Craig. I also took classes at Marquette University in a Ph.D. program with a double major in Philosophy and Ethics, but didn’t finish. At Marquette I studied with Dr. Ron Feenstra, Dr. Marc Greisbach, and Dr. Daniel MaGuire. I have taught extension classes for Lincoln Christian College, Lincoln, IL, and I taught for Great Lakes Christian College, Lansing, Michigan, for the College of Lake County, in Grayslake, IL, for Tri-State University, Angola, IN, and for Kellogg Community College, Battle Creek, MI. I was in the “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” in 1996.

From December of 1987 to December of 1990 I was the Senior Minister of the Angola Christian Church, Angola, IN, and for a year was the President of the Steuben County Ministerial Association. Before that I had several ministries in Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois. I was in the ministry for about fourteen years, or so, and wrote many articles for the Christian weekly magazine, The Christian Standard.

I have a copy of this book, and it is a great read. Entries will be taken until Tuesday, May 6 2008. All entries will be posted in a new section on the site for peer review. Sunday, May 10, the winner will be announced. The winner will be chosen by you, the readers. There will be a rating with each essay, highest rating wins.

Pleases send all submissions to bookcontest [@] thejesusmyth.com. This email address will be invalid after may 6, so get writing! This contest is open to current authors on TJM and everyone.

Talk about some cheap enrollment opportunities! And you thought that Christian Private schools were expensive…

A Simple Good-Bye

March 17, 2008

I have to admit that this year has been great. I have loved every moment that I have shared with each and every one of you here at TJM. Many of you have become what I would consider dear friends. This year has not been without its’ share of ups and downs, and most of you have been there for it all.

The contents of TJM is being moved to Reason VS Faith. Even in that, I will only play in an oversight role. Why? My true passions lie elsewhere. In all honesty, I find it quite maddening to debate with people that, quite frankly, just are not genetically geared to follow reason rather than blind faith. Most people are easily subdued into submission simply through fear.

I am ready to move on to something that may actually make a difference, which is what I ultimately would like to be a part of. Activism is in my blood, although it has been ignored for some time. With the way that this nation is going (the world, in fact), I feel like my time would me better put to use trying to do what I can to unite rather than divide. Yes, I will create a new blog for that purpose. No, I will not advertise it here.

I have been approached by a couple of people that are interested in the TJM brand. Should a reasonable offer manifest itself, I will be accepting it. Until that time, TJM will be maintained, although new content may be sparse. My apologies in advance for that.

Until we meet again-

Call to Arms

February 13, 2008

I would like to offer my apologies first and foremost for not having been around much within the past month. This has been quite a hectic month for me and my family as we have purchased a new home and are in the midst of selling the house we are currently in. Loads of fun, let me tell you. Some of you that know me on more of a personal level also know what my work schedule is like, which even leaves less time in the day with everything that’s going on. Read more

Open and Ready to Rock

February 3, 2008

We are happy to announce that Reason VS Faith is currently online and ready to go! The home page is fully functional with more coming down the pipe soon. Be sure to head on over and let us know what you think.

PS~ We are still looking for theists to author on RvF. If you ar interested, please use the contact form at the RvF site. Thank you!

RvF: Progress Report

January 9, 2008

As most of you know, our project, Reason VS Faith is in development.  How’s it coming along? Great, thanks for asking! The design is moving right along (as some of you that have gotten a sneak peak have seen). Now, I will be concentrating on the inner workings of the site. Here is what we have so far.

There will be two administrators (or moderators, if you will), one for each side of the discussions. We want this site to be as balanced as possible. As the site grows, we will add more moderators.

Each author will have their own RvF email address, so as to not plug up their personal email addresses with site related emails. (Gets annoying, really.  Especially when your name is Darque and you write a post that gets over 45 comments in a night…)

There will be a “Meet the Press” page with the authors’ blurb and a picture, if they wish to have it posted.

What would you like to see? Do you want a forum included in the site? Now is the time to bring up the wishlist!

Reason VS Faith: The Next Adventure

January 4, 2008

TJM will remain as it is; a place for atheists and agnostics to post their thoughts and essays. Anyone is permitted to comment but it will be run by AA’s and the posts will be from the perspective of AA’s.  I have received requests for a more open site that has a balanced group of authors from both sides of the fence; atheists and theists. AskMeHelpDesk.com

January 2, 2008

Yippee! This is yet another forum where we can let our voices be heard. There are many other cool things on there as well, but I joined a couple of days ago and if nothing else it’s driving traffic to our site, just like some of the people on that site say. A lot of the talk about Luci’s issue is whether or not it’s legit, and I can understand their concern. However, I, as well as Luce and Rival, are trying to impress upon the readers there that this isn’t a ploy for Luci to get money nor is it something that we are using to get people to our site. Let’s get over there and give all the information that we have. The more the merrier!!

In My Own Words…

December 31, 2007

Hey folks.

I’m Luci’s son who was mentioned in the post To Be Deported For Voting. Firstly I really wanted to thank everyone for all the help and support you’ve given to me and my folks, you will never know how much it means to us. Read more
