Funeral Talk

March 29, 2007

For those of you that didn’t know, I was at a funeral this weekend (which is one of the reasons that I have not posted recently). The night before, I attended a prayer service. While milling around with my daughter in tow, I observed people. Not during the actual service, mind you. Although I am an atheist, I do respect the beliefs of those around me. Some of the conversation struck me as odd.

Keep in mind that the community affected by this death was highly Catholic. I actually heard two women talking to each other and a solitary question peeked my interest. “But I don’t think that we believe in reincarnation. Wait, do we believe in reincarnation?” Mind you, these women were over the age of…well, they could get free coffee at the local McDonald, let’s just keep it at that.

At first, I could not believe what I was hearing. These ladies were not even sure about what their core beliefs were concerning death! Then again, a majority of Christians know very little when it comes to even the history of their religion, let alone theology, dogma and ideology.

    Doesn’t surprise me at all.

This is why many of the FreeThinking variety of Atheist can quote (or at least reference) scripture better than the average pastor, priest, or nun. - They have studied it in depth, and not glossed over the strange parts that they don’t like.

FreeThinkers don’t blindly follow a teacher or “Expert”, self proclaimed or otherwise, but instead study the actual evidence regarding a topic, and formulate conclusions on that evidence.

Contrasting FreeThinkers are many Christians (among others); specifically, the ones who follow their faith only because of peer pressure or carrot/stick psychology.

Got something to say?
